Expand your majors search! A few Cal Poly SLO majors draw far more first-year applicants than they have room for, but lesser-known majors often offer similar course maps and career paths. Here's how to use our list of alternatives.
How to use this list
Pick a major you'd be glad to graduate in. Switching into a high-demand major after you enroll isn't guaranteed, so check that department's change-of-major criteria before counting on it.
Aim at the goal, not the label. Grad schools rarely require one exact major. Pre-med, pre-PT and pre-PA students can major in Chemistry, Nutrition or Animal Science as long as they complete the prerequisites.
Start with the closest matches: Nutrition for Kinesiology or Public Health, Chemistry for Biology, and Physics or Materials Engineering for Aerospace.
A quick note
“Popular” isn't the same as “lowest admission rates”. Cal Poly publishes admit rates by college, not by major, so treat this popular majors list as a map of where demand is highest.
Why these alternatives fit
Psychology: Child Development, Sociology and Communication Studies all study human behavior, and Philosophy is a strong pre-law and pre-grad path.
Biological Sciences: Chemistry shares the pre-med core, Animal Science leads to pre-vet, and the environmental majors build on ecology.
Kinesiology: Nutrition covers health and performance science, with paths to PT and dietetics.
Public Health: Nutrition is the closest match, while Sociology and Child Development cover community health and policy.
Aerospace Engineering: Physics, Materials and Electrical Engineering all feed aerospace careers and grad programs.
Choosing an alternative isn't settling. Many of these majors lead to the same careers and graduate programs, and a well-matched major lets your application tell a clearer story about who you are and where you want to go.
